Here Comes the New Kyriarchy, Same As the Old Kyriarchy

Hi everyone! I’m living up to “Obsolescence is the New Relevance” for real. Here’s Episode  2 which I hosted with my good buddy Cynara Geissler, published author, and one of the Fatties on Ice! She and I discuss plus size fashion on the red carpet, self-consciously old fashioned racism, whether or not Bridesmaids-like raunchy women’s comedies are a new fad (spoiler: nope), Tarantino as women’s film director, queer subtext in The Muppets, why we’re doing this, and more.

In the Works.

Hey folks!

First, I want to direct you to a (very) round table conversation I had with Cynara Geissler and Jenny Henk, the Fatties On Ice, about the first appearance of Fat Betty on Mad Men.

If you’re following the progress of the podcast, I want to reassure you that there is content in the pipeline! Unfortunately it has been slowed down considerably due to technical difficulties. The one computer I have that I can use to edit audio is on the fritz and I have to take it in to get repairs. But I have a new episode half done, and more being planned! I also have some ideas for special minicasts, and there’s a book review on the way too! So please, keep checking in for new content!

Also, a good way to keep track of updates is to follow FatOnFilm’s twitter!

Corpulently yours,

The first ever episode of Fat On Film! Where your host  Margarita and her guest Leah Cronen make ill-fated Oscar predictions for best picture, get self-consciously pretentious, worship Miss Piggy, talk about the lineup of the Sasquatch Music Festival, Hipster identity, and crack wise. What better way to usher in a new podcast than to release it right after it loses relevance, right? Just kidding, this angle lends the episode an extra-amusing layer through the lens of history. Yes.

Show notes:

  • Hattie McDaniel was indeed a singer and songwriter before her acting career. She also had a T.V. variety show, performed on radio,  was the first black person to win an Oscar, and might have been the first female black singer to be nationally broadcast on radio, (according to her Wiki page).
  • A couple of places to find great critiques of The Help:,
  • The 1st Academy Awards ceremony was in 1929, honoring films from 1927 and 1928.
  • The title of the Woody Allen film starring Ewan McGreggor was Cassandra’s Dream (2007).
  • The Gay Divorcee (1934) was in fact the first Ginger Rogers/Fred Astaire movie.
  • The Guy Maddin films mentioned were Saddest Music in the World (2003), Brand Upon the Brain! (2006), and My Winnipeg (2007). He has a new feature called Keyhole out in 2011.
